AUTO-SHEATHING SAFETY KNIFE

UTC Aerospace Systems
Patent Pending

While interning with UTC Aerospace Systems, I was tasked with designing a safety knife to meet UTC's new blade exposure regulations. After sketching a lot of design ideas on paper, I modeled my preliminary design in NX. I then 3D printed several prototype iterations before arriving at the final design. The final product worked so well that UTC decided to pursue a patent for the design.

PROJECT SUMMARY

  • Designed an entirely unique product from the ground up.

  • Gained considerable experience with 3D modeling.

  • Gained experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping.

  • Created animations in NX showing how to operate and maintain the knife.

  • Created assembly instructions for further production of the knife.
